Dethatching is the process of removing just the right amount of thatch from the lawn. Dethatching is very important in the spring. Dethatching is the process of using a machine to go over the lawn and pull out dead grass plants, thatch, small twigs and leaves that have been stuck to the ground all winter. Thatch is not necessarily a bad thing; in fact a small amount of thatch is good. It is when thatch begins to get too thick that it is a problem. Thatch is made up of dead grass plants, decaying leaves and twigs. Too much thatch will block out sunlight, water and fertilizer from reaching grass roots and the soil. By removing just the right amount of thatch, it will allow the key ingredients to reach the roots and maintain a green, healthy looking lawn. The best time to dethatch is in the spring. It is usually done during the spring clean up or at latest right before the first fertilizer application. Dethatching is important in the spring because it helps to "Awake" the lawn after a long, sleepy winter. By helping remove any debris and thatch stuck in the lawn it helps the fertilizer to gain access to the roots and in turn by helping the fertilizer gain faster access, the lawn can get back to its healthy, green state of life. All debris from dethatching will be hauled off property.
